But we don’t actually own what we write. You could make a case for AUs, maybe, but we don’t own it. You publish it online for free, you use the worlds and characters of another person’s work. If you took your fanfiction versus another person’s work (say a HP fanfic and Harry Potter itself), the courts would say we plagiarized if we made any money whatsoever off of our fic. We don’t own it. We just don’t.
You own your creativity, sure. That’s entirely yours. If you took your fanfic, changed the names and changed it enough so that it didn’t resemble any form of a ‘spin-off’ it’s absolutely 100% yours. But now you’ve created a wholly original story, perhaps based on another work, and now only vaguely resembles it’s original fanfiction form (looking hard at you Cassandra Clare but that’s a whole new ballgame)
But fan fiction, by it’s very name, is stories about another person’s work. It’s fiction written by fans and with current property/intellectual laws, you will never own it.
And you’re right, we do it for free for other fans.
But Amazon isn’t going to stop free forums for fanfiction. They’re not going to shut down ff.net or AO3 or Teaspoon or livejournal or whatever. It’s providing a service. Authors make money, Amazon makes money. It’s another option in the giant world of the Internet.
Amazon doesn’t want to claim our rights, but it has to do something to make money because it just bought the copyright ability to sell fan fiction if authors decide they want to do that. And I think Amazon has every right to sell my things to others because I DON’T OWN MY WORK. Do I own the idea of the work? Sure, maybe. But the minute I attach ‘The Doctor’ and ‘Rose Tyler’ to my story, I think I lose my right to that work (and any court would agree).
I think this is a beta process, sure. There are still kinks to be worked out in the entire logistics of it, but it’s a great step into broadening fanfiction’s presence in mainstream society and giving it a bit more credibility.
And I know it’s Wiki (and there are some cool sites you can check out by Kent Law and some other universities and even JSTOR), but here’s a good summary of fanfiction and legality.
As much as I’d like to say we own our works, we don’t. And if an author chooses to enter into a contract with Amazon, it’s not exactly like they’ll be getting robbed blind. They’re going to make money off their work, but yes, Amazon is going to make money off of it also. They’re a business, not an altruistic entity, and they’re the first serious, big name corporation who has recognized the fanfiction community as something to be tapped into and explored, which I think is cool.
And all of this extravagant, “fanfiction is transcending the work” and “fanfiction is this grandiose thing” is ridiculous. Okay, there is White House presidential fanfiction, there is biblical fanfiction about Jesus fucking Mary, okay?
People need to hop off their fanfic pedestal and look around. There is some FANTASTIC AND AMAZING NOVEL WORTHY fic out there that I would buy in a heartbeat if it was offered via Kindle Worlds. And there is fic that is shit and I wouldn’t click on it, even if it was free.
That was less in relation to your comment (except maybe to address the ‘the love of writing, for others to enjoy’ because idk who is enjoying obama/bush smut or jesus/abraham smut) and more in relation to just some general elitism I’ve seen recently as fanfiction gets more attention.

Anyway, in response, we don’t own it. I would have to listen more and read more and wait more on Amazon’s stance about this ‘owning rights’ nonsense and what that would entail. But as of right now, no, I don’t necessarily see anything wrong with it and I am very excited about it!
EDIT: another thought came to me. also: when you publish a work on say ff.net and another person copies it and uploads it as theirs, there’s nothing you can do because you don’t own it also. you can complain to mods and get that person kicked off, but you can’t legally sue them either because your work doesn’t belong to you either. there was another point swarming around about this scenario but i forgot

So, this got long.

I talked about it briefly here.
I distinctly remember when TV Guide first mentioned fanfiction about 9-10 years ago and I almost dove for the magazine rack to shield my mother’s eyes from it because if she knew about this movement, she would question me and start searching my Internet browser history and THAT WOULD BE THE END OF MY LIFE AND I WOULD DIE FROM EMBARRASSMENT. And I remember buying that magazine sneakily and reading it and feeling like a bigger dork, because you’re right, the article made it a joke and something that weird people do and it convinced me that whatever I did in life, I had to keep my love for fanfiction a secret.
Howeverrrrrr, I think that was 9-10 years ago and the overall quality of fanfiction has definitely increased.
[As a side-note, I recently found a notebook where I had hand-written the titles, authors, fandoms, and URLs of fic because I was terrified to bookmark them on my family’s shared computer. On a whim, I went back to see what the fics were like that my 11-year-old self loved so much and it almost physically pained me to read what I thought was worthy of bookmarking. I think this is testament to (A) the improving quality of fics [[like holy shit we have authors being PUBLISHED who started in fanfiction!]] and (B) a mark to how much personal reading changes]
I also think more ‘respectable’ sources have been commenting on the wave of fanfiction and its usefulness for study as a contemporary field of academia (TONSSSS of scholarly/peer-reviewed articles on fandom culture/fanfiction/etc)
So I think that the media attention is a good thing because it’s:
normalizing fanfiction
removing the stigma
giving fanfiction its due in terms of its place in literature
encouraging academic study of fandom culture
encouraging creativity and other writers to publish
encouraging a new dialogue in an academic setting
As for not quite hitting it on the head, I think that’s just going to be a matter of personal experience with fanfiction, same way that book reviews/movie reviews/any other media review, will be based on a singular or group of experiences.
I am personally enjoying watching the media attention shift to fandom culture in general.
Geek chic is in right now. That’s the fashion. It’s cool to wear fandom shirts and have sly fandom references somewhere on you (either in clothing, buttons on a bag, or even tattoos). It’s cool to be media-focused in a way that I’m not sure it has been.
I’m really enjoying watching the younger-ish Tumblr users (maybe 14-17?) and their experiences compared to older Tumblr users (20+) because believe it or not, those experiences, I think, are wildly different.
So, my opinion on the matter is that it’s AWESOME. I think there is still a danger of making a joke/mockery of the process, but with that comes the opportunity to shed some serious light on the awesomeness of fanfiction and fandom community.
[OH THAT WAS THE OTHER THING. Think about all of those lonely 10-12 year olds like you and me who might not even know there are whole COMMUNITIES of people just like them to talk to and get involved with. And they’re getting this information from magazines and media outlets! That’s awesome! I wish I had media sources telling me where I could find other like-minded people. I had to stumble upon fanfiction by accident. So I think the attention is also opening a lot of social doors (and like I said, the opportunity to study the society/culture around fandom) for people.]
So, yeah, definitely, bring on the media attention I think it’s time our communities got to shine.

#fic #fanfiction #fic converter #personal

does anyone know how to turn a LJ fic into a PDF?

i know about flagfic, but they can’t convert LJs yet.

[i have a mac, so if it’s software it would need to be mac compatible!]

Rose couldn’t help but feel a little bit smug. All those planets, all those universes where the Doctor had outsmarted her at every turn—“It’s against the law to smile, Rose!” and “It’s illegal to drink from there, Rose.” Now, 3 years later, she was finally on top. “No, Doctor, like this. Hold it like a pencil between your thumb and pointer finger. That’s it.” The Doctor huffed. What was the point in eating with 2 sticks anyway? With a glare in Rose’s direction, The Doctor picked up a fork.

woah. like 5 of you have asked if I have a fanfic account or a place where all of my askbox fics are located.

um, for future reference, I have a ff.net account here with woefully horrible stories. Seriously, and most of them aren’t complete, because if it’s longer than a drabble I lose interest. But they will be finished….one day. I mean, 3 are completed.

As for my askbox fics…um. I don’t even know how to conglomerate all of them. You can track my URL, maybe? There are quite a few of them hanging out in there. Other than that, um, I’m working on it and any input would be more than welcome!

But, honestly, I’m completely blown away anyone wants to keep reading, so thank you very much.

FF.NET POLICY TO REMOVE ALL ‘M’ FICS WITH GRAPHIC/EXPLICIT CONTENT:

“Please note we would like to clarify the content policy we have in place since 2002. FanFiction.Net follows the Fiction Rating system ranging from Fiction K to Fiction M. Although Fiction Ratings goes up to Fiction MA, FanFiction.Net since 2002 has not allowed Fiction MA rated content which can contain adult/explicit content on the site. FanFiction.Net only accepts content in the Fiction K through Fiction M range. Fiction M can contain adult language, themes and suggestions. Detailed descriptions of physical interaction of sexual or violent nature is considered Fiction MA and has not been allowed on the site since 2002.” (x)

Prompt: Sabriel (Not a whole lot to go on!)

“What do you mean, ‘You hoped for condolence sex’?”

Sam looked at the Angel in his bed with narrowed eyes. Gabriel looked back sheepishly.

“Well, in all fairness, the Trickster was encouraging me, and you get this puppy dog look and it’s really kind of adorable. I mean, I figured if you were grieving for Dean, you might be more, uh, open, to my advances.”

Sam scoffed. “I can’t believe you made me watch Dean die for pity sex, Gabe. That’s low and kinda pathetic.”

Gabe shrugged. “But it worked.”

i’m in a writing mood.

send me a prompt?

a word, a sentence, a pairing, anything.

no pressure.

….but secretly there’s a little pressure.
